Free Graphics Tool – GIMP

What is GIMP?

GIMP is actually an acronym that stands for: GNU Image Manipulation Program.
What does that mean?  GIMP allows you to perform a variety of image manipulations, like retouching photos and the construction and composition of images.

Down to Brass Tacks:
The reality is most of us aren’t that sophisticated. Sometimes I use GIMP as a function rich ‘Paint’ program or just to resize images. The beauty of GIMP is that you can use it for simple tasks up to quite complex jobs – all for free!

NOTE: If you are a professional graphics designer then you will want  to consider investing in your business by purchasing one of the graphics software.  My daughter is a graphics/website designer and uses Photoshop for her work.  It was a worthwhile investment.

I am talking to those who want to get started with minimal investment.  I suggest learning how to use GIMP.

Here are just a few of the features you can find in GIMP:

• A full suite of painting tools including brushes, a pencil, an airbrush, cloning, etc.
• Tile-based memory management, so image size is limited only by available disk space
• Sub-pixel sampling for all paint tools for high-quality anti-aliasing
• Full Alpha channel support for working with transparency
• Layers and channels
• A procedural database for calling internal GIMP functions from external programs, such as Script-Fu
• Advanced scripting capabilities

• Multiple undo/redo (limited only by disk space)
• Transformation tools including rotate, scale, shear and flip
• File formats supported include GIF, JPEG, PNG, XPM, TIFF, TGA, MPEG, PS, PDF, PCX, BMP and many others
• Selection tools including rectangle, ellipse, free, fuzzy, bezier and intelligent
• Plug-ins that allow for the easy addition of new file formats and new effect filters.

Don’t shy away if many of these features are alien.  Start out with the basics and then  begin to build your skills.  I would recommend that you buy an expensive set of tutorials that will save you tons of time and money.
