Best free website development tools?

I know there are free tools on the web for doing website development, and I am archaic and still using Notepad. What are your recommendations? I looked at Dreamweaver but man that is expensive.

if you want the best free one that i highly recommend is

Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express

it comes with a bunch of other programs, collectively known as Visual Studio.

they are really good because they're free but still let you build applications and Websites at a professional level.

There are several ‘free’ HTML editors available. I have taught over 100 students HTML and website design and have always recommended NVu and the Kompozer.

Kompozer is the free HTML editor that is supported now.
(Just do a Google search and you’ll easily find the download page.)

PS Later you may find that Dreamweaver or FrontPage will better suit your needs.
