What is the editing tool that professional movie makers use to make effects in movies?

What are the tools (preferrably free) that I can buy and/or download (if free) from the internet that can aid me to easily produce movie effects on my movie I am currently designing. I need something beyond movie maker from windows with doesn’t have any computer graphic creating tools. I really need this guys, so please help me…

Sorry can’t think of exactly what you’re looking for but …
iMovie has limited effects.
There are effects packages you can buy for good editing softwares, i think there’s one for iMovies if not Adobe is good and has software for pretty much everything.
