GMail Makes it Easier for You to Switch
It can be a huge pain to change your cell phone number. These days, it’s just as complicated as changing email addresses. Gmail is making it easier for us all. Google announced yesterday that Gmail now migrates email and contacts from other email providers, including Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, and many more. Taking it one step further, Gmail also gives you the option to forward your email messages for up to 30 days while you test it out.To set this up, just head over to your Gmail settings, and you’ll see a new tab labeled “Accounts and Import.” While this feature is available for all new Gmail accounts, it is still being rolled out on existing accounts so be patient if you don’t see these options just yet. Businesses and schools using Google Apps won’t see these new migration options.

The Best SEM Tools

The world of SEM Tools is vast and can seem complex, so I wanted to simplify things for people. Before I go in to my details, I think it’s important that we understand that the best three tools really are from Google Adwords and Google Analytics (especially because it’s free), Yahoo Search, and my recent favorite of MSN Ad Intelligence with Excel. Go to the article from SearchEngineWatch.com if you want to go read their take on all the SEM tools. But, I recommend reading the couple of paragraphs on what you need to know about SEM Tools.
I recently got a demo of MS adCenter Ad Intelligence tool’s new features coming soon. It’s more robust and has some interesting features on keyword intelligence that are quite amazing. I obviously can’t get in to the details, the features will be released in the upcoming adCenter release, just within a month or two. It’s suppose to be one of the biggest releases for Microsoft’s adCenter. If you have not downloaded the excel Add-In tool, you can go ahead and do that by Clicking Here Excel Add-In
One of the biggest problems with the tool was that it was previously not available for Excel 03, but that was fixed weeks ago. The industry has largely hailed this tool and it’s integration with excel as the best keyword and user behavior tool out there. Now if Microsoft just solves the search query problem, we would all be very happy!
As far utilizing the tools the key thing is to remember, that Search Engine Marketing is all about understanding the search engines. So you have to understand the basics of their algorithms, their user behavior, and how then rank ads. Let’s not forget it’s all about keywords, keywords and more keywords. For SEM Tools the most important first step is understanding search keywords and thier CTR’s, their volume, and obviously their price. But what’s really important is to understand the back end conversion on your own site and how those search keywords are converting for your business.
You would also be surprised how much search engines look at the landing pages of the Ads. More and more relevancy of your ads text matching your keywords and your landing page content the better. Of course, Google still looks at Landing page Title tag as the most important, and heading tags and content on or near the top of the page as possible. They all look at it basically the same way, the more relevant the keyword match, the higher your ad shows up and lower your bid prices. This was more of a myth in the past, but you really have to pay attention to keyword relevancy in your ads and in your landing page. If you can automate as much of your keyword inserts from query as possible via variables the best.
The article above mentions other great SEM tools for bid and budget management and better reporting. Tools such as Overture’s, 360i.com, and eFrontier obviously have internal data insights not just their technology to enhance campaigns. So for big spenders, these tools and SEM services go hand in hand and should be utilized and managed properly with every eye of details and trends through smart analytics work.

Ning Shows Some Zing
Ning has hit a pretty significant milestone reports cnet. The social network enabler has just seen its one millionth
network set up. This was accomplished in two years which makes the number even more impressive (average of 1,370 networks started per day).Of course, it doesn’t hurt when Marc Andreessen is a co-founder and the timing was good considering the upswing in popularity of social marketing / media / networking over the past two years. The flip side of that is the possibility that the folks at Ning had a pretty accurate crystal ball and called this one pretty well. Either way, being good fortune or recognizing opportunity the success is there.
Ning has overcome its fair share of adversity as well.
Ning lost 20 percent of its page views in December when it chose to shut down networks containing porn and other adult content. Traffic had recovered in February, CEO Gina Bianchini told CNET News.
The company made a business decision to clean house of the rough stuff back in December and it went into effect in January. The $60 million raised in VC way back when certainly helped with this decision as did some pressure from advertisers.
The CEO who has been on the cover of Fast Company in the past told cnet that the most successful sites are those that have rabid and passionate followings like thetwilightsaga.com which is
an official fan site for the vampire-themed book series that converted to a Ning network shortly after the first book was turned into a hit movie. In two months, 94,000 people joined, she said.
One thing to note is that while there are 1 million networks the active member numbers aren’t quite that high. One fifth of the networks are considered active while 6.1 million of the 22 million registered users are classified as active.
With a small staff and good backing we may well be hearing more about Ning as the economy really starts to weed out the players and posers.

In what could open up a whole new set of search lingo like “head of local search” terms etc. Google is now giving local results in their SERP’s without needing the searcher to ID a local qualifier. Now when you have the emergency need for a lawyer you can save yourself a few seconds by not having to type your city or town name to find one. Well, that is really oversimplified but sounds cool.
As reported by Mike Blumenthal, Search Engine Watch and Cathy Rhulloda, Google is now using your IP address and other location qualifiers to give its local “10 pack” of results as local solutions to your one word request. If I now need a lawyer in Raleigh, NC I can just search “lawyer” and on the first page, usually around the fourth or fifth result, I will see the 10 pack.
These same results will show up at the top of the SERP if you use a local geographic qualifier so Google is not quite committing whole heartedly to saying local is the absolute best result for these types of searches. They are however ratcheting up the level of prominence of a company’s Google Maps profile since the sheer number of searches that it can appear in has gone up considerably in many cases.
Results initially are spotty. In other words, it doesn’t work for all terms. This is a pretty strong development, though, as it relates to local search. All the more reason to make sure you small business types claim and optimize your listings.
